TC passes Voted PPEL; thank you for your support of our district
Thank you to the Families and Friends of Tri-Center for your support! The PPEL passed by a resounding margin of 80%! I feel very lucky to be living in a community that is so supportive of our school. This money will give us flexibility in the years to come to take care of infrastructure items without having to dip into the money that goes directly to the education of our kids. So, again, Thank You! #StrongCommunities #StrongSchool #TCStrong |
Voted PPEL vote is September 12th; how does this affect your tax rate?
School finance is categorical in nature. What this means is that different funds must be used for certain things. Two special revenue funds that Tri-Center utilizes are the Management fund and the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy.
One of the questions I've received is: "If the proposed Voted PPEL levy rate increases, how is it possible for my taxes to not increase?" This is a great question, so let me break it down below. Currently, the Tri-Center levy rates for 2017-18 are as follows: If the proposed Voted PPEL issue is passed on September 12th, the 2018-19 Special Revenue levy rates are estimated as follows: Notice the figures in red in the estimate above. The Management rate is reduced to .41677 while the Voted PPEL increases to 1.34. Based on the estimates above, there is overall decrease in levied funds and a decrease of the overall levy rate if the issue would pass on September 12th. This is achieved by lowering the levy rate on the Management fund, which is what the Tri-Center School Board is committed to doing. Tri-Center can better utilize the PPEL fund than the Management fund at this time and in the near future. If you have questions, please feel free to call me at 712-485-2257 or email ahuseman@tctrojans.org Thanks! Dr. Angela Huseman Superintendent, Tri-Center Community School District |
Parent-Teacher Conferences Wednesday and Thursday; Book Fair in HS Library
This is Superintendent Angie Huseman, and I wanted to take a minute to remind you about Parent-Teacher Conferences which will be taking place at Tri-Center this Wednesday and Thursday, February 22nd and 23rd from 4-8 p.m. I urge you to come and visit with your child's teachers to find out all of the great things they have learned, as well as learn from your child's teacher(s) the ways you could be helping to support your child's learning. Additionally, the Book Fair will be going on next week in the HS Library, and no one wants to miss out on that! |
School bus transportation reminder
To Tri-Center parents whose kids ride the bus: We have more and more kids that do not ride the same bus every morning/night. In order for us to keep track of where your child is going, we ask that you communicate with Mrs. Fischer in the Elementary (485-2271) and Mrs. Smith in the Middle School/High School office (485-2257) of any changes NO LESS THAN 2 HOURS before the end of the day. (By 1:30 on a regular day, and by 11:30 on an early out day). We realize there will be times where something will come up at the last minute where you will need to call after that deadline; however, this should be the exception, rather than the rule. Please communicate this expectation to your children, as well. Thank you for your help with this. We have a lot of children riding busses, and we want to do everything we can to make sure every one of them gets home safely. We cannot do that without your help. Thanks, Dr. Angie Huseman Superintendent |
April Happenings
Tri-Center families, it is hard to believe Easter is over and spring weather is in full force. I hope you all get the time to enjoy the changing weather and scenery of the season. Here are a few important dates to remember for April April 1 - Preschool Screening Day – Please call for an appointment. April 1 - No PK today April 5 - PK to IWCC for Health Fair April 7 - Jump Rope for Heart April 7 - 6th Grade Orientation at 7:30 April 7 - 9th Grade Orientation at 6:30 April 8 - Kindergarten Roundup Day (If your child did not attend Tri-Center Preschool, please call us @ 485-2271 for information.) April 15 - 1:30 Dismissal for In-Service April 16 - Prom April 20 - No PK today April 18 - Spring Music Program Grades K-1 2:00 and 7:00 PM April 27 - Secretary’s Day April 28 - 2nd Grade Field Trip to Gifford’s Farm April 29 - No School – InService Day Snow day make up. With spring weather upon us you may have already forgotten, Tri-Center had four days of school canceled due to inclement weather and road conditions. Tri-Center students will be making up two of these four snow days. The last day of school for students will now be a 1:30 dismissal on Thursday, May 26th. Contacting elected officials. You may have noticed in the headlines an increase to State Supplemental Aid (SSA) of 2.25% is waiting for the Governors approval. The timing of this increase is over a year past the legal deadline for notification and woefully inadequate when compared to the rising cost of expenses and the increases in state revenues. Please consider contacting your elected officials and encourage them to support funding for Iowa’s public schools. As the spring weather continues to increase encourage the instinct for some is to spend less time studying and more time outside. Encourage your students to combine these things and press hard through the end of the school year. Please email, call or stop by any of the school offices with questions you may have. Update on accident; grief resources
Today we were deeply saddened to notify all students of the death of one of their own. Gage Williams died last night in a car accident. He was a freshman at Tri-Center Schools. Our school family is holding his family close in thought at this most difficult time. We are unaware of funeral arrangements at this time but will pass any information we receive along as it becomes available. We notified the students about his death and answered any questions that they had as well. We have additional Green Hills AEA staff on site in order to support students and district staff as needed. We suggest you talk with your child about this loss and respond to any questions that arise. Here are some tips for talking with your student:
It is important to remember that grief reactions vary greatly among individuals. To aid in the support of your child/children, attached are resources that address helping children of all ages understand death, as well as a recommended website that includes guidance regarding grief and support for children and youth. Please do not hesitate to contact the schools with questions or concerns. We are committed to assisting our school community during this time of loss and appreciate your ongoing support. Sincerely, Tony Weers Superintendent |

Financial Update: SBRC Decision
Good evening everyone. You may have noticed an announcement about the SBRC decision in the Nonpareil yesterday. Tuesday afternoon the SBRC committee approved the Tri-Center Corrective Action Plan (CAP) along with our request for Modified Supplemental Amount (MSA) of $99,232 to make up for the negative unspent balance in FY 15. Below is an explanation of what this means for Tri-Center:
Student enrollment and modified allowable growth are factors we will continue to watch closely as we move forward with short and long-term financial planning. Please email, call, or stop by with any questions you may have about this decision and what it means for us. Thank you... Tony Dr. Tony Weers, Ed.D. Superintendent |
